Obituary Condolences

David V. St. John , 77, a longtime resident of Franklin, died after a long illness on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at the Milford Care & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Barbra J. (Ziegler) St. John who died in 2004. Mr. St. John was born in Newton on June 11, 1933. He was employed as an Optical Engineer at C.L. Berger & Sons of Boston for 35 years, the last ten years as Chief Engineer and Vice President of Engineering. Mr. St. John loved sailing and private flying throughout New England. He enjoyed canoeing and fishing and was active in the U.S.C. Aux. as a Navigation Instructor. He was an avid photographer and writer. In his retirement he devoted his talents to the restoration and conservation of early American scientific instruments for museums and serious collectors and was a published author in numerous technical journals on the subject of conservation of surveying instruments. His work in conservation was recognized by Rolex of Switzerland in the Spirit of Enterprise, the 1990 Rolex Awards. He is survived by five daughters, Barbara A. McCarthy of Leesburg, FL, Karen L. Gray of Scottsdale, AZ, Norma J. Lachapelle of Farmingdale, ME, Theresa H. St. John of Saratoga Springs, NY and Laura J. Ramey of Freeport, FL, ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Services will be private and are under the care of the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin, 131 Main St. (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com). Donations instead of flowers may be made to the Mass.
