Gretchen H. Duffield

Obituary Condolences

Gretchen H. Duffield passed peacefully in her sleep on 1/14/13 after a brief illness. She was 75 years old. Gretchen was a Professor of Sociology at Dean Jr. College from 1973 until her retirement in 1997. She then took a part-time job at Recreational Equipment, Inc. (R.E.I.) which kept her connected to the world of outdoor sports which was a passion of hers. Gretchen took up back-packing in her 50's and began taking trips to such places as Mt. Rainier, Denali National Park, the Grand Canyon and the Galapagos Islands which she lovingly documented in detailed scrapbooks. She was fearless in her pursuit of outdoor adventure. She tried dog-mushing, rock climbing, white-water rafting and, even snowboarding! A long-time resident of Uxbridge, Gretchen served for a time on the Conservation Commission. Gretchen's other great love was her Keeshond dogs. She began adopting this special breed in 1988 and over the years she gave a loving home to many rescued dogs. Gretchen is survived by her daughters Jillian and Amy Duffield, her son-in-law Daniel Mucha, her grand-daughters Jessica and Emily Mucha, her sister Karen Berkeley and her nieces Erica and Kristina Berkeley as well as other extended family members.
