Horace Mazzone Obituary
Horace Michael Mazzone of Easton CT formerly of Wellesley Hills MA died Dec. 13, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer and the toxic side effects of cancer drug therapy. He was born May 19,1930 to Horace Mazzone and Rose Genoa Mazzone of Franklin MA. After completing a Bachelor and Masters degree in science at Boston College he served two years in the Korean War. Honorably discharged to the Army Reserves, he retired twenty years later as Colonel with a Masters degree from the Naval War College in RI. He received a doctorate degree in microbiology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and pursued a career in research. Horace published a book on viruses and was working on a second one when he fell ill. He married Arlene Crosby when they were both young researchers at the Dana Farber Foundation, Boston. Upon retiring from research he responded to Connecticut's call for more science teachers by obtaining a Masters degree in education at Bridgeport University, Bridgeport CT. For twenty years after that until a month before his death he taught biology courses at Norwalk Community College, Norwalk, CT. He loved teaching young people and was a popular instructor. Always generous, he contributed to American Indian charities for about fifty years. He also set up and funded a special research program at the University of Wisconsin in honor of his graduate student mentor. Horace leaves behind his wife and daughter Anne and several cousins. Cousin Jane Tardif in particular has given Horace's wife and daughter much kindness and assistance in their time of grief as has his wife's niece and nephew. Horace's only sibling, John Mazzone of Franklin MA, died many years ago. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour, Saturday Dec. 19th, from 9:30-10:30AM at the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. Franklin, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church 1 Church Sq. Franklin at 11AM.
