John D. Hughes Sr. 76 died November 12 in Milford Regional Medical Center. He was the husband of Rita (Gaffney) Hughes. Born in Waltham, June 30, 1934, the son of the late John G. and Arlene (Coleman) Hughes, Mr. Hughes was raised in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston and had lived in Franklin since 1973. Mr. Hughes had worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier from their Newton Center location for many years. Mr. Hughes had proudly served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He attained the rank of Corporal and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Corporal Hughes had been an Ordinance Disposal Specialist. John was a member of the Newton American Legion and the VFW of Hyde Square, Jamaica Plain. Time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his most treasured moments. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, John D. Hughes, Paul W. Hughes, Joseph G. Hughes and Pamela A. Hughes all of Franklin. He was the father of the late Susan Hughes. He was the brother of the late Arlene P. Wall. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. His graveside service was held on Tuesday Nov.16 in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 2. Visitation was on Tuesday from 11-1 p.m. in the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com) 131 Main St. Franklin. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the DAV of Massachusetts Rm 546 State House Boston Ma 02133.
