Joseph M. Modica, 85, of Norfolk formerly of Medway died February 6 in the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of the late Evelyn (Calamia) Modica who died in 2001. Born in Brooklyn, New York, august 3, 1927, the son of the late John and Anne (Pelucco) Modica, Mr. Modica was raised in Brooklyn and had lived in Medway from 1957 until moving to Norfolk 10 years ago. Mr. Modica had an interesting life. He was a talented drummer and had played in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra and also the Gene Martinelli Band. He had been an insurance adjuster for Continental Insurance Company and an agent responder for the Honeywell Corporation. Mr. Modica also worked for the Brinks Armored Car Company. He had worked private security and had protected and late Rose Kennedy in Hyannis once, during which she asked him to dance with her. He had also protected the King of Saudi Arabias jewels. Mr. Modica had also been a Boston Special Police Officer. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He enjoyed photography as well as music. He is survived by his children, Barbara Modica- Moore of West Wareham, John Modica of St. Petersburg, Florida, Richard Modica of Canton, Karen Collins of Uxbridge, William Modica of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Kim Salem of Stoughton, Robert Modica of Framingham and Joanne Camara of Franklin. He is also survived by his brother Robert Modica of New York City and his grandchildren, Shannon, Sabrina, Michael, Alexa, Cole, Zachary, Bryan, Jake, Luke, Sydney and Samantha. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 12 from the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com) 3 Barber Street Medway at 9:15 followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph Church at 10:00. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Medway. Calling hours will be on Monday from 4-8. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital PO BOX 1000, Dept. 143 Memphis, TN 38148.
