Robert H. Gagnon Obituary
Robert H. Gagnon, 83, of Franklin, and a former Fitchburg resident, died Friday September 26, 2014 following a long illness. He was the husband of Genevieve B. (Caissey) Gagnon. Born in Fitchburg, September 15, 1931 a son of the late Herve and Cora (Couture) Gagnon, he was raised and educated in Fitchburg, and graduated Fitchburg High School in 1949. He continued his education later in life and graduated from Central New England College in 1985. Starting in sales with John Hancock Life Insurance Company in 1960, Mr. Gagnon was a career insurance marketing vice president. He retired as such at the former Union St. Jean Baptiste Insurance Company that was located in Woonsocket. He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Entering in 1951, he served until 1959when he was honorably discharged as a Tech Sgt. In 2001 he was classified as a totally disabled veteran due to exposure to radiation during atomic bomb testing in the early 1950's. He was a member of the American Legion Post 367 in Medway, and VFW Post #2727 in Bellingham. He was very active in community volunteer service. In Bellingham, where he formerly lived, he was president of the Friends of the Library, and was on the new library committee. In Franklin, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Senior Center, Food Pantry, and Senior Bus for Groceries, Tri Valley Services, a poll worker, and was an usher at St. Mary's Church. He served as a member for the Franklin Council on Aging, the Franklin Housing Partnership, the Franklin Housing Trust, and the Franklin Commission for Persons with Disabilities. He also served as a member on the building committee for the Iraq & Afghanistan Monument. In 2008, he received the Spirit Award from radio station WMRC. He was an avid reader, enjoyed all sports, and traveled with his wife to many areas in the US and Canada. They spent 15 years wintering in Florida to avoid NE snow. Surviving in addition to his wife of 62 years are 2 daughters, Jean M. Larrabee and her partner Joseph Victoria of East Greenwich, RI, Nancy G. Isabelle and her husband Mark of Mansfield, a brother Roland Gagnon of Florida, 4 grandchildren, Cory and his wife Erin Isabelle, Brianna & Mary Rose Isabelle, Robert Victoria and a great granddaughter, Savannah Isabelle. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Wednesday Oct. 1st, at 9:15AM from the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St., with a funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Franklin at 10AM. A private family burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Fitchburg. Calling hours are Tues. 4-6PM.
