Robert Potenza Obituary
Robert Potenza, 98, resident and educator of No. Smithfield since 1946, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 17, 2010 in Overlook Nursing Home, Pascoag. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, parents, Angelo and Augusta, brothers, Leonard and Joseph and nephew, Joseph. His loving son and caregiver, Richard, survives. Mr. Potenza served as Superintendent of North Smithfield Public Schools from 1946 until his retirement in 1972. During his tenure, he oversaw the construction of Halliwell School and the North Smithfield High School as well as implementing improvements in curriculum, special education, languages and vocational education. He was a past president of the RI Association of School Superintendents and a member of the American and New England Associations. He received a baseball scholarship to Boston College, earning a degree in education, followed by a Master's degree from Boston University. He was a teaching principal in Medway, MA, the oldest living graduate of Medway High School and he had auditioned as a pitcher for the Red Sox and Boston Braves. Mr. Potenza was a charter member of the No. Smithfield Little League, the Frehill Knights of Columbus and a past president of St. John's Church Holy Name Society. His funeral will be held Saturday, April 24, 2010, at 10 a.m., from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., in St. John the Evangelist Church, Church St., No. Smithfield. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
