Robert R. Taranto, Sr. 79, of Franklin, died Monday February 24, 2014 at the MetroWest Medical Center in Natick, following an illness. He was the beloved husband of Ethel M. (Ebbs) Taranto. Born March 29, 1934 in Waltham, a son of the late Emanuel Taranto, Sr. and Eva (Brooks) Taranto, he was a former resident of Somerville and was a Franklin resident since 1961. Robert was raised and educated in Somerville, and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951 during the Korean Conflict, where he studied electronics; he attained the rank of ATA3 and served aboard the USS Yorktown. He was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal; he was honorably discharged in March 1955. Upon returning home he worked as a Quality Control Inspector for Raytheon from 1958-1973 and for GTE from 1973 until his retirement in 1993. Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and the many years on the golf course with his wife. He was a true Boston sports fan, enjoyed watching movies and drumming up practical jokes. He was a member of the Medway VFW, and was a communicant of St. Marys Church, Franklin. In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by his children; Robert R. Taranto, Jr. of Franklin, Barbara J. Walls and her companion Richard Tartaglia of Medway, Marie E. McCarthy and her fianc Darren Cosgrove of Medway, Joseph M. Taranto of Uxbridge and David F. Taranto and his wife Karen of Franklin. Also surviving are his grandchildren; Cory, & Christine Walls, Erin, Michelle, & Alan McCarthy, Brittany, Joseph, Jr., Brandon, & Julia Taranto, 2 great randchildren; Aidan and Lorelei Walls & many nieces and nephews and extended family. He was the brother of the late John, Eva, & Emanuel Junie Taranto, Jr. Relatives and friends were invited to attend his funeral Friday Feb. 28th, at 9AM the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. Franklin, with a funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, 1 Church Sq. Franklin at 10AM. Interment with military honors followed at the parish cemetery.
