Shirley Ann (Thompson) Tewksbury, formerly of Cohasset died peacefully October 2, 2012 surrounded by family. Shirley, daughter of Elmeron and Carrie Thompson, was born and grew up on a dairy farm in Canton, NY. After graduating from Canton High School, Shirley attended Potsdam State Teachers College in Potsdam, NY, graduating with a degree in elementary education and minor in music education. While at Potsdam State she met her husband, Hamilton Thaxter Tewksbury, who was attending Clarkson College. Following graduation, Shirley taught in Albany, NY for 2 years. She and Hamilton were married in Canton, NY in 1951, moving shortly thereafter to Brookline, MA, where Shirley taught for 2 years. Shirley and Ham settled in Cohasset in 1953, where they resided and raised their four children, until moving in recent years to assisted living facilities in Weymouth, MA. Shirley was well-known in Cohasset, where she spent many years working in the Cohasset school system, first as a substitute teacher while her children were growing up, and later as an elementary teacher, where she touched the lives of countless children and families. Shirley was very active in the Unitarian Church, working as Sunday School Director and in many other capacities, including in recent years as a member of the Nursery School Committee. She spent many years serving at the annual Christmas Bazaar sponsored by the churches around the common, assisting at the White Elephant Table. Following retirement, she volunteered in the maternity ward at the South Shore Hospital. In March 2011, Shirley and Ham gathered with family members to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. Shirley was a devoted wife of the late Hamilton Thaxter Tewksbury. An adored mother, and grandmother, she is survived by four children, Meredith Menton and her husband Michael of Southington, CT, Karen Dauer and her husband Gary of Franklin, MA, Ellen Volpe and her husband Jim of Germantown, MD, and H. Thaxter Tewksbury and his wife Lisa of Charlestown, RI; 10 grandchildren, Greg Menton, Nicole Menton Stevens, Daniel Dauer, Robert Dauer, Emily Dauer, Josh Volpe, Renee Volpe, Rachel Tewksbury, Alison Tewksbury, Sara Tewksbury, and 1 great grandchild, Sarah Menton. A wake will be held at McNamara-Sparrell Funeral Home on Friday, November 2, 2012 from 4-6 pm. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held at the First Parish Church in Cohasset, MA on Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 2 pm.
