Walter Groncki 90 of Franklin, Massachusetts, went home to be with our Lord on Friday, January 10, 2014 at Countryside Health Care, Milford, Massachusetts, following a courageous battle with Alzheimers. For the past two years he resided at Compass Memory Loss Assisted Living at Golden Pond, Hopkinton, Massachusetts. He was the loving husband of Angela Anne (Grisi) Groncki for 67 years. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 1, 1923, he was one of seven children of the late James and Anna (Niewiadomska) Groncki. Walter was a resident of New Milford, Connecticut for 43 Years before moving to Massachusetts. He was raised in Baltimore, Maryland and also resided in Jersey City and Moonachie, New Jersey. He retired from Branson Sonic Power in Danbury, Connecticut as an Automation Engineer. He was an active member of the New Milford, Connecticut VFW, where he called bingo every Thursday evening. He was an avid hunter, bowler, and enjoyed outdoor sports and spending time with his family. He was gifted with a creative mind and was always tinkering and inventing gadgets. Walter served his country in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was assigned to the destroyer, USS Fechteler, DE157 as a Radarman Second RD2. The Fechteler was torpedoed and sunk in the Mediterranean in 1944. He enjoyed attending many reunions with his surviving shipmates. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and was honorably discharged in March 1948. Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by a loving son, Michael Bruce and his wife Eileen of Franklin, Massachusetts. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Lt. Michael Groncki and his wife Jennifer of Sitka, Alaska and Kathleen Katie Cinelli and her husband Todd of Franklin, Massachusetts; five great-grandchildren: Abigail, Hannah and Mikaela Groncki of Sitka, Alaska and Rex and Eiley Cinelli of Franklin, Massachusetts; one sister, Marie Gaegler of Parkville, Maryland. He was predeceased by his siblings: John, Frank, Theodore Groncki, Jennie Hoskins and Jessie Gladkowski. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 10AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, One Church Square, Franklin, Massachusetts. There are no calling hours. His interment with military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Charles F.
