Francis J. Aguilar

HBS Professor Francis Joseph Aguilar (Frank), 80, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, died peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, February 17, after a 3-year battle with gallbladder cancer. Frank was born on August 19, 1932, in New York City, the son of the late Francisco Aguilar of Zacatecas, Mexico, and Maria (Wagner) of Bamberg, Germany. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx in 1950 and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a B.E.E. in 1954. He served as a US naval aviator, squadron legal officer, from 1954-1957 and was active during the Korean War. He attended Harvard Business School, graduating with an M.B.A. in 1959 and D.B.A. in 1965. He then joined the faculty of HBS where he taught General Management, Accounting and Control and Business Ethics for 35 years. He also served on several corporate boards and consulted with various firms on strategic planning and business ethics. His several publications include "General Managers in Action", "Scanning the Business Environment" and "Managing Corporate Ethics". Frank and his wife of 48 years, Gillian (Crawford), brought up their four children in Belmont, MA, where they lived for nearly 40 years. Six years ago, they moved to Portsmouth, NH, where they enjoyed living overlooking the Piscataqua River in the downtown area. Frank had many interests and avocations. He was an avid hiker, having hiked all Four Thousand footers in summer and winter and all the Hundred Highest mountains in New England. In his forties, he climbed the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Mount Fuji. He also enjoyed golfing, skiing, ballroom dancing, painting, classical music, theatre, opera and reading. He travelled on business and with his family all over the world. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family at his home on Squam Lake where he loved to kayak, canoe and scull, as well as clear brush to uncover many a hidden blueberry bush. Frank was a member of Corpus Christi parish in Portsmouth. Frank is survived by his wife, Gillian; two sons, Bruce and John; two daughters, Kim Harvey and Anne-Marie Aguilar; two daughters-in-law, Eneida and Jennifer; a son-in-law, James Harvey; his brother, Werner; his brother-in-law, Christopher Crawford; and six grandchildren: Benjamin, Jade, Isabella, Lily, Leah and Vaughn as well as several nephews and nieces. SERVICES: Relatives and friends are invited to a funeral mass to celebrate Frank's life at Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer Street, Portsmouth, NH, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 9.
