Curtis Hamilton Smith, Sr., 81, a longtime Acton, MA resident, died Sun. Jan. 26, 2014 at the Life Care Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton after a long illness. He and his wife, Joanne L. (Heffernan) Smith, recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. Born in Bethlehem, PA, he was one of seven sons of the late Milton Henry Smith and Alice (Bachman) Smith. Mr. Smith served honorably during the Korean War in the US Navy from 1950 to 1952, then in the US Army from 1953 to 1956. He was employed for over 35 years with the US Postal Service before retiring, serving in the West Acton and Concord branches for a time and mainly in the West Concord Office where he was the Superintendent of Window Services. He enjoyed time spent with his family, camping, the Red Sox, and company of his faithful companion, a Dachshund named "Fritzy." In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Michael S. Smith and his wife Shirley E. of Ayer, Mary-Alice Mullin and her husband Thomas of Acton, and Curtis H. Smith, Jr. and his wife Pamela of Pepperell; three grandchildren, Jason M., Kristen E. and Hollis A. Smith; two brothers, his twin Gilbert Smith of PA and John Smith of CT. He was the brother of the late Woodrow, Wilbur, Stanley and Milton Smith. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting on Thurs. Jan. 30th from 10-11am at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Ave (Rte 111) Acton. The funeral home service will follow at 11am, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Central St., West Acton.
