Roger Lawrence Towne, 78, of Acton, formerly of Palmer, died unexpectedly Feb. 2, 2012 at his Acton home. Born in Southbridge and raised in Palmer, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Evelyn (Dumas) Towne. A graduate of Palmer High School, Mr. Towne served honorably for 14 years in the US Air Force during the Korean War and the Vietnam Era, settling with his family in Acton in 1966. He was a retired manager in educational services for the former Digital Equipment Corporation, where he worked for 26 years. A talented artist in watercolors, many of his works were featured locally including art shows at the Acton Senior Center and on display at the Concord Public Library. He also enjoyed contra dancing and photography. Mr. Towne was a former member of the West Acton Baptist Church, and was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church in Acton where he served as a trustee. He is survived by two sons, Eric Towne and wife Monica of Weare, NH, and Roger Towne and wife Amanda of San Jose, CA.; and his former wife, Barbara Bulleit of NC. He was the brother of the late Jerrold and Robert Towne. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service on Wed. Feb. 8th at 10:00am in St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, 435 Central Street, Acton, with Rev. Steven Garnaas-Holmes officiating. A reception will follow the service.
