I called Mr. John Carlson back in 2005 on his personal line. He spoke with me for about 45 minutes regarding his broadcasting career and I told him how his phenomenal voice should be introduced to a new generation of fans. What a voice he had! You could hear how much he missed sports announcing. I sent him two tapes from his broadcasting days with the Patriots and he sent me a Christmas card. I JUST tried calling him back last week to check on him and I JUST found out he died before writing this message!! I am truly bummed about this. My condolences to the entire Carlson family. Thank you so much for sharing your father and his vast media and military skills with us. May each of you be comforted during the months and years ahead.

It was my privilege to serve in the Massachusetts Army National Guard Under General Carlson's leadership. He pinned on my bars when I was commissioned after he advocated on my behalf to obtain my commission. I will never forget his generosity or his humor. He will always have a special place in my heart.

He was the actual most interesting man on earth. A conversation with the "General' could start with small talk about the weather and end with an analysis of Douglas MacArthur's strategy at Inchon in the Korean war, or the fact that with regards the Adam's (John and John Q.)"Quincy has the bones but Braintree has the birth certificates". But you would always end up back in Braintree, just as did the General regardless of the topic, because that was home.

Never forget the day when John was coaching at Cardinal Spellman High he came to practice dressed to the nines. During practice he kept adjusting his tie. He was hoping we would notice his super bowl ring/ Which we all did. We chose to ignore his actions to tease him. Aftwer practice we all fawned all over John and begged to try it on. He will be missed. jo sHAW FELLOW COACH AND FRIEND OF THE FAMILY/
