J. Dougherty Obituary

J. Leo Dougherty, age 84, of Braintree, died peacefully, Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the John Adams HealthCare Center in Quincy, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Watertown, raised and educated in Quincy. He graduated from the former Saint Johns Elementary School in Quincy, Quincy High School, Class of 1947, and Marianapolis Preparatory School in Connecticut. Leo also attended Arizona State University. He lived in Braintree for fifty-nine years, previously living in Quincy. Leo served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was employed as a design draftsman in the shipbuilding industry for over thirty years working for various companies and retired from the U.S. Navy Department. Leo was a member of the Adams Heights Mens Club in Quincy. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, and working around his home. He was the beloved husband for fifty-eight years of Lois I. (Grassick) Dougherty; devoted father of Leslie A. Dougherty and her husband Mark Peretti of North Easton, James D. Dougherty and his wife Beth Dougherty of Boxford, Joanne Leahy and her husband Paul Leahy of Boston, and John T. Dougherty of Needham; loving grandfather of seven grandchildren; brother of Robert Dougherty of Braintree, Sr. Janet Dougherty, SCN of South Boston, Kathleen White of Plymouth, Noreen Cole of Florida, Paul Dougherty of France and the late Sr. Gertrude Dougherty, CSJ, Gerald Dougherty, Margaret Buckley, Sr. Shirley Dougherty, CSJ, Mary Hastings, and Elizabeth Johanson. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral was held from the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, 1 Independence Ave., Quincy, Saturday, Jan. 12, at 9 a.m. Funeral Mass in Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School St., Quincy, at 10 Oclock. Visiting hours were at the funeral home Friday 4-8 p.m. Interment in Braintree Cemetery. Donations in Leos memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02472. Matthew 7:20 states "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." ... I did not know Leo but I know his son Jim ... based on that I know that Leo was the kind of man I would have been honored to know.
