James D. Surette Obituary
James D. Surette, of Braintree, age 82, entered into eternal life on April 13, 2013 after a brief illness at South Shore Hospital in the company of his family. Jim was born and raised in Dorchester and has lived in Braintree for 55 years. Jim served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1949 until 1952. He served our country in Korea and received a Purple Heart. Mr. Surette worked as an HVAC designer for GTE-Sylvania in Needham for many years. Mr. Surette was a member of Disabled American veterans, Chapter 29 in Braintree. He was very involved in several Drum and Bugle Corps., including the Norman Prince Corp.; and was instructor of St. Johns Drill Team in Cambridge. He leaves his wife, the love of his life, Patricia (DiMartino) Surette of 61 years. He also leaves his loving children, Diane Grillo and her husband David of Bellingham, James T. Surette of Braintree, Patricia Smith and her husband Jonathan of Braintree, Mary Bebo and her husband Mark of Hanson, and Paul Surette of Braintree. Much loved Papa of James, Andrew, Lauren, Lynne, Nicholas and Victor, and the late Daniel Smith. Two great-grandchildren, Brian Jr. and Danielle, whom he loved dearly. The youngest of 6 children, he leaves 2 sisters, Mildred Burke and her husband William of Farmington Hills, Michigan and Jeanne Sass of Weymouth. He was predeceased by siblings Raymond Surette, Pauline Olsen, and Bernard Surette. His many nieces, nephews and family members have many fond memories of his renowned summer holiday cookouts. One of his proudest legacies was the family July vacations to Marthas Vineyard for over 40 years, that overflowed to extended family and friends. He also had his signature recipes for grape jelly, minced meat, and pop-overs. He was an avid Bruins fan, enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family. Funeral from the Clancy-Lucid Funeral Home, 100 Washington St., Weymouth on Thursday, April 18 at 8:30 a.m. Funeral Mass to be held at Sacred Heart Church, Weymouth at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours were on Wednesday, April 17, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 9 p.m. Burial will take place in Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
