Saran E. Gillies Obituary
Saran Elisabeth (Bruce) Gillies, 79, longtime resident of Braintree, passed away July 2, in Hammonton, N.J. Daughter of the late Lyscom and Margaret (Luce) Bruce, Saran was born in Boston, April 22, 1931. S he grew up in Newton, moved to Worcester, attended the Bancroft School and graduated from Worcester Classical High School and Radcliffe College. She moved to Braintree in 1955, where she raised four children. She became an active community leader, first in the local chapter of the League of Women Voters, serving as president, and then as a town meeting member for many years. She was elected Braintrees first woman selectman, and became chairman of the board. She was subsequently elected town clerk, in which position she served until her retirement in 1991. In addition to civic leadership, her main passion was the environment. She led the effort to establish Braintrees recycling program, including curbside pickup, and received the EPA Environmental Award. She is survived by her children, Andrew and his wife Catherine Cahners of Newton, Katherine and her husband James Seaman of California, Christopher and his wife Nancy (McLaughlin) of New Jersey and Philip of Allston; and four grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for September.
