Armand A. Guarino, 93, of Pearl Street, died Monday, June 17, 2013, at Soldiers Home, Chelsea Mr. Guarino was born in White River Junction, Vermont, one of nine children born to Raffaele and Virginia (Vega) Guarino and was a 1938 graduate of Hartford High School in White River Junction. He continued his education at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where, in 1942, he received his bachelors degree in education. In 1943, Mr. Guarino entered the United States Army / Air Corps. Following his discharge from the armed forces, he enrolled at Harvard University in 1949, from which he received his masters degree in education. He began his career as an educator in the Windsor, Vermont school system. He then continued on to work as a principal in the Ashfield and Orleans, Massachusetts and Springfield, Vermont school systems before, in 1971, becoming principal at the Ayer High School. He retired in 1978. Mr. Guarino remained active in many community and education efforts including three terms and chairmanship of the Ayer School Committee. He was a member of the Ayer | Shirley Lions Club as well as the Ayer Gun & Sportsmans Club, Cape Cod Secondary Schools Principals Association and he co-founded the Ayer High School Conservation scholarship. In his spare time he loved to hunt, fish and garden. Some of his happiest times were spent with his family at his camp in Norwich, Vermont and with his childhood gang, The Secret Six. He was a man whose family came first and who enjoyed spending time with his extended family of nephews and favorite nieces. His granchildren and great grandchildre constant delight to him. He leaves his wife of 62 years , Alice L. (Streeter) Guarino; three daughters, Diana L. Guarino of Florida, Erica L. Peno of Orleans, Shelley V. Migrants and husband Kurt of Shirley, MA, sister, Lorena Guarino of Wilder, VT; four grandchildren, Jesse Peno and wife Megan, Tony Derenthal and wife Jennifer, Benjamin Peno, Sadie Peno and six great grandchildren; Aidan Sullivan, Brendan Peno, Jack Peno, Tessa Rose Peno, Anthony Derenthal and Logan Derenthal. He was the brother of the late Marcello Guarino, Alphonso Guarino, Alfred Guarino, Arthur Guarino, Christie Guarino, Florence Guarino and Amelia Terino. Funeral services were held Friday, June 21st at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Rd, (Rte 2A) Ayer, Mass.
