Lauren McClellan 64, of Wellfleet Massachusetts, died peacefully at home after a long illness October 10, 2013. She was born to the late Francis A. and Martha Hill McClellan on April 22, 1949, in Boston, MA. Lauren graduated Winchester High School in 1967 and studied Fine Arts at The University of Maine at Orono. Having learned from her dad how to fix cars, Lauren drove and repaired her VW bug across the country and landed in Portland, OR and Vashon Island, WA. Her core values of hard work, perseverance and good humor served her well in her work at Children's Club, a cooperative Daycare, and the housing collective where she lived with a memorable cast of characters. Lauren was very pleased to play the role of mother to several children during this time. These years forged deep friendships and good fun--including sewing and living in her own tipi, all within sight of beautiful Mount Hood and Mount Rainier. In 1983 Lauren returned East to assist her brother Rob at Hatch's Fish Market in Wellfleet, MA, a "summer" job which lasted nearly 30 years! Her hallmark patience, generous listening and delight in her work life made her a favorite boss and mentor to many. Lauren's steady leadership, artful command of display, insistence on quality and love of her customers and suppliers shaped Hatch's Produce into an inspired source for local and organic food for the town of Wellfleet, and generations of summer residents and visitors alike. Throughout her life Lauren refined her skills as a painter, birder, kayaker, and traveler--enjoying adventures big and small in Europe, North Africa, Baja, Panama, Costa Rica, and throughout North America. She found joy in exploring and honoring the natural beauty of her home turf Cape Cod, escorted by her beloved dogs Mr. Wiley and Ruckus Brown. Lauren especially adored her family with whom she spent long hours sharing stories and laughing. She cared for her mother through Parkinson's and helped make it possible for her father to live at home until his recent death at 101 years. Lauren is survived by her brother Donald McClellan, his wife Christine, and their son Travis McClellan of Maine and daughter Jenifer of Maine and Wellfleet, who cared for Lauren during her illness; brother Robert McClellan, his wife Margaret, and their sons Ross and Dugan McClellan of Wellfleet, MA; close friend Paula Erickson of Wellfleet; and a vast network of chosen family and friends. The Earth lost one of her best stewards in Lauren, whose passion for the natural world began early in life-- hiking and skiing with her family in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the place where her parents first met. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lauren's name may be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club. www.outdoors.org/tribute A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, November 17, at the Wellfleet Preservation Hall, 335 Main St., Wellfleet.
