Phyllis Blume

Obituary Condolences

Phyllis Norma Blume of Brewster died on October 21, 2013. Active and independent until mid-September, she died at Liberty Commons in North Chatham of congestive heart failure. Her loving friend and advisor, Debra Johnson, was at her side. Phyllis was born May 5, 1927, in Waltham, MA to George and Georgia Gowell Blume of Lexington. Her dearly loved mother died when Phyllis was seven. While still in her teens, Phyllis went alone to California and from there to Galveston, Texas, where she lived, and worked in a bank, until she returned to Massachusetts over 35 years later. She was married to Leslie Garrison of Galveston from 1947 to 1956. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents and four older siblings, Dorothy, Marion, Wilbur and her adored Joe. She leaves several nieces and nephews and their children, Debra Johnson, Jean Sears, who was also a caring friend and advisor, and friends in her Brewster communities at the Baptist Church and the Council on Aging. Phyllis was known for her hats; for her love of animals, children, and feeding the birds; for her astute perceptions and her intelligence; for her compassion for all suffering; and for her playful humor. One recent morning, as others were bemoaning the approach of winter and shoveling snow, Phyllis said impishly from her bed, Ill look down on you and wave. The time and date of a memorial service at the Brewster Baptist Church will be announced when determined. Contributions in honor of Phyllis may be made to the Brewster Council on Aging or to any organization dedicated to the welfare of children or animals.
