Louise (Hobbs) Mulholland Bierkan, 85, of Brewster and formerly of Orleans died Thursday February 13, 2014 at Epoch Senior Healthcare in Brewster. She was the wife of the late Herbert H. Bierkan who died in 2010 and the late Richard I. Mulholland who died in 1983. Born in Branford, CT, Mrs. Bierkan was the daughter of the late George W. and Florence E. (Carpenter) Hobb. She was a graduate of Springfield Classical High School in 1946. Mrs. Bierkan was the owner and bookkeeper, along with the Mulholland family, of the former Backus and Soule Jewelers in Orleans and South Dennis from 1969 until the mid 1990s. A longtime resident of Orleans before moving to Brewster in 2010, Mrs. Bierkan was a diaconal member of the Community of Jesus in Orleans; a former member of the Chatham Chorale for 20 years during the 1970s and 1980s, and a former member of Pilgrim Congregational Church in Harwich Port where she was a member of the choir and a past member of the board of trustees. She was also a former member of the Orleans Federated Church, and of Hope Church in Springfield. Mrs. Bierkan is survived by three sons, Richard I. Mulholland, Jr. and his wife, Jacqui of South Dennis, David S. Mulholland and his wife, Debbie of Wilmington, NC, and Douglas E. Mulholland and his wife, Audra of Centerville; two step-sons, Rev. Andrew J. Bierkan and his wife, Darlene of Cincinnati, OH, and Ross H. Bierkan and his wife, Jeanne of Vienna, VA; two step-daughters, Susan B. Demming and her husband, Steven of Farmington, CT, and Holly B. Platter of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husbands and parents, Mrs. Bierkan was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm Hobbs (former publisher and editor of The Cape Codder) and a sister, Shirley Heiden. A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 18 in the Church of the Transfiguration, 5 Bay View Dr., Orleans. Interment will be private. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday Feb. 17 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.
