Horace E. Ayres Obituary
"Spike" Horace Ewart Ayres, age 89 and known by his family and friends as Spike, passed away peacefully on July 14 at the NVNA Hospice Residence on Turkey Hill Lane in Hingham, Ma. Spike was born in Dedham, Massachusetts on Columbus Day in October 1924 to Esther and Horace Ayres. In May of 1946, following his return from war, he married his high school sweetheart, Elsie Eklof . Together they lived a loving and wonderful life, celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary this year prior to Elsies passing on May 27th. Spike leaves his sister Jane Winthrop of Foxborough, Massachusetts, his son Richard Ayres and wife Carol of Rotonda, Florida, and his daughter Carol Wright and husband Gordon of Brewster. He will be missed by his grandchildren Rebecca Mullin of Eastham, Amy Ayres of Eastham, Abe Boyle of Orleans and Fawn Schanz of Marina Del Rey, California; also his three great grandchildren, Jordan, Anna and Dylan, as well as nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his sister Betsy Nelson of Norwood and Centerville, Massachusetts. Spike and his sisters were ninth generation grandchildren of the Mayflowers John and Priscilla Alden. Additionally, he leaves his sister-in-law, Ingrid Eklof Bamber of Walpole, Massachusetts. He graduated from Lawrence Academy, Groton, Massachusetts in 1943 and like so many at that time, immediately enlisted in the army during WWII and served in the European Campaign where he saw action starting on the Normandy beaches and into Germany. Post war he worked for Mutual Boiler Insurance Company, followed by Powernail Co. as their Northeast Sales Manager from 1957 until his retirement in 1989. Many of these years were spent at a winter residence in Westwood, Massachusetts while enjoying the summer months at Smith Heights on the Town Cove in Eastham. The last 30 years found Spike and Elsie enjoying their retired life together in their home on Driftwood Lane in Orleans. Services will be private. The family thanks Hope/Hospice of Cape Cod at 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601 and NVNA and Hospice, 86 Turkey Hill Lane, Hingham, MA 02043 for their exceptional care for Spike. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to either.
