Alan J. Fleming

Alan J. Fleming, age 91 years, of Bridgewater passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater, following a period of failing health. Alan was the husband of Evelyn (Johnson) (Stewart) Fleming and the late Margaret Lila Fleming. Born Sunday, Sept. 11, 1921, in Brisbane, QLDS, Australia, he was the son of the late Robert and Annie Margaret (Svendson) Fleming, and attended Rosenstengle Business College in Brisbane, Australia. Alan served in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II from 1942-1945 as a pilot flying Lancaster Bombers and Whiraways. He was later requested to fly for the RAF where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he returned to Brisbane, Australia, until 1947 when he returned with his Yankee bride Lila to the U.S. Alan also lived in St. John New Brunswick, Canada, Malden, Brockton, and most recently Bridgewater. Alan held several positions in his life working for Dominion Stores in Canada, Irving Pulp & Paper, Joslins in Malden, Jordan Marsh, retiring there as assistant controller, then on to Marshalls, ACME Glass Company as vice president, and finally ABCD of Boston as fiscal controller retiring once again at the age of 65. Alan enjoyed playing golf. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Malden, and formerly a member of the Holbrook Rotary Club. Alan was also a member of the Community Covenant Church in East Bridgewater. With all these accomplishments in his long life what mattered most to him was his love for family and friends. In addition to his wife Evelyn, Alan is survived by six children, Alana L. (Fleming) Bowdridge and her husband Ralph of North Andover, Sherrill A. (Fleming) Steiner of Portland, Texas, and Douglas A. Fleming of Rochester, N.H., Lee Stewart of East Bridgewater, Robert Stewart and Donald Stewart, both of Holbrook. He had 11 grandchildren, Scott Lewis, Brian Lewis, Hollie (Briand) Swierc, Heather L. (Bowdridge) Ankiewicz, Kevin Bowdridge, Rachael Buckley, Sarah Stewart, Kaitlyn Joyce, Matthew Stewart, Bradley Stewart, and Ashley Stewart. He also had 11 great-grandchildren, Kevin Lewis, Kristin Lewis, Scott Lewis, Steven Lewis, Courtney Lewis, Carley Lewis, Lila Ankiewicz, Nicholas Ankiewicz, Macy Swierc, Tripp Swierc and Reagan Buckley. Alan was predeceased by his brothers, Robert Fleming, Gordon Fleming, and his sister, Catherine (Fleming) Rasmussen. A memorial service for Alan was held Friday, July 19, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Community Covenant Church, 400 Pleasant St., East Bridgewater.
