Gary DeCoster Obituary

Gary DeCoster, beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, passed away Feb. 23, 2011, in Sarasota, Fla., after a long illness. Born in Stoughton, Jan. 16, 1935, to the late Lloyd and Valda (Carr) DeCoster, Gary attended Stoughton High School, graduating in 1953. He married his high school sweetheart, Maryann (Felos) DeCoster, Sept. 24, 1954, and they began their life together first in Ashland before settling in Bridgewater. A devoted provider, Gary worked as a tool and dye apprentice for several years before starting his career at Raytheon, Inc., in Marlborough. He continued his education while working two jobs, finally earning his associates degree from Massasoit Community College in 1968. Gary retired from Raytheon as a senior cost analyst in 1993 after a successful 32-year career. He and Maryann moved to Franklin from 1989 to 1993 before returning to Bridgewater for their retirement. Gary worked part time at the East Bridgewater YMCA for 12 years, making many friends amongst the members and his co-workers. Throughout his life, Gary had a passion for understanding how things worked, with particular interest in technology and communications. While as a teenager he re-built many a Packard engine and loved cars, following his fathers lead, Gary became an avid ham radio operator (WA1CIM) meeting new people around the world from the comfort of his den. From 1979, as an early, pioneering user of the first Apple home computers, to the internet, to online banking, to digital music and social networking, Gary always looked for the potential of new technologies to make life better and more fun | and it kept him young beyond his years. While Garys many other interests included sailing, cooking, music (he played the organ and the clarinet), yard sales and traveling, his greatest love was spending time with family, his beloved wife Maryann, prior to her passing in 2007; his daughter, Kristin Casey and her husband Christopher; and his grandchildren, in whom he had boundless pride, Daniel, Hannah and James Casey. In addition to those family members, Gary also leaves his loving brother, Glenn DeCoster of San Diego; his sister-in-law and her husband, Terry and John Perry of West Yarmouth; and his friend, Donna Cahoon of Port Charlotte, Fla. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 12, at 3 p.m. at the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St., Bridgewater, with visitation held before the service from 1 to 3 p.m. A private burial will take place on Cape Cod. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Strong Kids Campaign, East Bridgewater YMCA, 635 Plymouth St., East Bridgewater, MA 02333. For online guest book, visit www.ccgfuneralhome.com. My thoughts are with Gary and his family and friends,I know he is safe up in heaven. I was looking forward to meeting Gary in person and trying out one of his homeade fabulous desserts as he would tell me what he whipped up and I wished I was there to indulge in it. I am glad I got the opportunity to talk with him over the phone and see him with the technology of cameras on our computers which made it fun and more like being right there. He was very easy to talk to and had a good sense of humor. He will be missed dearly.

Gary….. My thoughts drift to the past trying to think of ways that could have prevented him from physically leaving us. As my sister Sherry said when our dad passed away 10 years ago, "I wasn't done with him yet." Gary shared many family and friend stories, always with that engaging smile. Over the holidays in Florida I was thrilled to finally meet his daughter Kristin and her family. Gary was so excited to share his family with ours and to share with his family his discovery of the Sunshine State; our time with Gary & his family was too darn short. Memories stay with us and sometimes are the only thing that can help us make it through the day. We get ‘busy’ with maintaining our everyday lives; but try to remember to Live in the Moment! Should family or friends find yourself in my ‘neck of the woods;’ let me welcome you to my home and we shall celebrate Gary’s life with cherished ‘moments’. Life does go on and we are able to make new memories in new ‘moments’. The author of the following poem is unknown but always gives me comfort ….

Sorrow comes in great waves
no one can know better than you
but it rolls over us
and though it may almost smother us
it leaves us on the spot
and we know that if it is strong
we are stronger
inasmuch as it passes and we remain.
It wears us
but we wear it and use it in return
and it is blind
whereas we
after a manner see.

Thanks Gary for all that you did,

With love, Pam, Steve & Jack

In the short time I've had the pleasure to spend with Gary the memories will last a lifetime. His genuine sincerity and warm kind heart will never be forgotten. Thanks for the lemon cookies, the corn bake, the cool man bag and turning me on to Sailor Jerry's Rum and a great evening ringing in the New Year on the beach.
I will miss Gary very much but I could never be any more fortunate than I was to have known him.
I'll remember him always.

The end of a lovely day sailing.

I have known and admired Gary all of my life. We grew up as neighbors in Stoughton, Massachusetts and over the many years have visited each other often. Gary was my "mentor" and he is the one who encouraged me to buy my first computer. Gary made many trips to our house, bringing along computer programs for my computer. Gary is the only friend I have from my childhood and both he and his brother, Glen were in our wedding party over 50 years ago. Lil and I will miss him greatly.
I will attach a couple pictures of a day I spent with Gary on his sailboat that he loved so much. A wonderful friend who will be missed by his many admirers. Ralph and Lil Staples

Caring, loving, laughter, family are only a few of the words that describe the sweetest man I've ever known. All the pain & suffering he endured he never complained. I'll always cherish the memories we made together; music in the parks, Florida beaches, sunsets anywhere!, sailing, cooking and exploring our prospective home towns. I'll wonder and dream about our plans we had yet to begin, traveling and spending time with family and friends. He is missed with a heavy heart and great sadness...May the sun always shine upon him and may my never ending love for him bring him warmth forever.
