George L. Cavanaugh

Obituary Condolences

George L. Cavanaugh of West Bridgewater passed away peacefully Feb. 13, 2013, at the age of 90. He was the beloved husband of the late Augustina (Gonsalves) Cavanaugh. George was a 1940 graduate of Brockton High School. He drove a taxi cab in downtown Brockton when a friend introduced George to a nice woman over dinner. The nice woman turned out to be the love of George's life and after marrying Augustina in 1952, they moved to West Bridgewater, where they happily lived for over 50 years. George was passionate about baseball, coaching little league teams and was an avid Red Sox fan. He loved to collect antiques and used what he called "a system" to celebrate many winning days at the dog track. George loved singing hymns, old Irish songs and participating in sing-a-longs at Emmanuel House in Brockton, where he resided for the past five years. George was a cherished uncle to James Gonsalves and his wife Ann of Raynham, Amy Brooks of Brockton, Richard Brooks of Avon, Denise Cahill of Brockton and loved by many more nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, John Jack Cavanaugh, Amy Cahill and Leona Brooks. A celebration of George's life was held Monday, Feb. 18, from 10-11a.m. at Sampson-Hickey-Grenier Funeral Home, 309 Main St., in Brockton, with a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial in Pine Hill Cemetery in West Bridgewater. Please contribute to Christ Congregational Church, 1350 Pleasant St., Brockton, MA 02301.
