Thomas S. Bates, age 65, of Bridgewater, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 21, in Middleboro after a lengthy battle with cancer. Born in Portland, Maine, in 1948, Tom was the son of the late Susie M. and Ralph S. Bates. Tom graduated from Bridgewater Raynham Regional High School, Class of 1966, and attended Southeastern Massachusetts University, where he majored in biology. Tom worked for many years for the MDC at Franklin Park Zoo in Boston, the Trailside Museum in Milton, and the Stone Zoo in Stoneham. He was most recently employed with the department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) at the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton. Tom was an outdoorsman and loved hunting trips to Maine and fishing in local ponds. Tom was also a martial arts instructor at the Colonel Daniel Marr Girls & Boys Club in Dorchester for 14 years. He held a black belt in Judo and a brown belt in Jujitsu. Tom is survived by his brother, James and his wife Donna of Middleboro; and his niece, Michelle Bates of Taunton. He is also survived by his cousin, Kenneth Thombs of Maine; and aunt, Pat; and cousin, Elizabeth Thombs of Virginia. Tom also leaves his close friends, James Sniger and Jim Cregg. Visitation period was held at the Prophett-Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 98 Bedford St., Bridgewater, Sunday, Aug. 25, from 3-6 p.m. Burial will be private.
