Obituary Condolences

Bernard Baker "The Barber from Brookline", actually a hairstylist, of Chestnut Hill, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011. He was born Berol Piekarewicz on March 28, 1929. His father Benjamin was a hair cutter and seller of exotic birds and Bernie would watch and learn from his father's barbershop at age 12. Benjamin died leaving Bernie to work and help support his family at the barbershop at the age of 14. He eventually had two barber shops but lost them to Fidel Castro's Regime. His sister Virginia & husband Philip Levy got him out of Cuba and to the freedoms of Israel where he worked & lived in a kibutz cutting hair, working the fields and guarding the border. He left Israel in 1967 for America to be with mother Yudes, sister Virginia and nephews Barry & Robert Levy and brother-in-law Philip. He continued to cut hair till semi-retiring around 2006, taking on his clients at his home at Chestnut Hill. Bernie enjoyed people, loved to joke and make them smile and some knew him for over 40 years. He will be missed and certainly not forgotten. He leaves his sister Virginia Levy, nephew Robert S. Levy and his late nephew, Barry W. Levy who predeceased Bernie in June 2011. Many are saddened by their loss as well. Graveside services at the Beth El Cemetery, under the direction of Levine Chapels, Brookline, have been held.
