Bernard Gollis Obituary
Bernard Gollis 85, formerly of Brookline, MA and Providence, RI on March 23 2016 after a brief illness, in Irvine, CA. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sandra (Levine), who passed away in 2006. He is survived by his son Richard, daughter in law Marci, grandchildren Zev and Daisy of Irvine, CA. Bernard "Bernie" Gollis was born in Fall River, MA to Emma and Henry, Jewish emigres from Eastern Europe. Henry relocated his family to Providence, RI in the mid-1930s and opened a small grocery on the basement level of their clapboard house at the corner of Sheldon and Benefit Streets, (now registered as the William J Doyle House by the Providence Historical Society). After Henry passed in the early 40s, Emma ran the store with the help of Bernie, older brother Morton, older sister Ethel and little sister Miriam. Subsequently the family moved to Arnold Street. The siblings all attended Nathan Bishop Junior High and Hope High School, where Bernie graduated with the Class of 1948. He followed Morton to the University of Rhode Island, was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi and earned a BS degree in Chemistry in 1952. After graduation, Bernie enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea in 5th Regimental Combat Team as a Staff Sergeant and Combat Medic. He was a decorated soldier having participated in several major conflicts including the notorious Battle of Christmas Hill. His wartime experience was documented as part of a Veteran's oral history project. After military service Bernie returned to URI and earned a MS degree in Education and began his long career in the public schools. Bernie taught sciences in Stamford, CT before joining Bedford Public Schools, in Bedford, MA in 1957. Until his retirement in 1993, Bernie served the Town of Bedford as science teacher and Department Chair, Vice Principal, Principal, Counselor and mentor to thousands of Buccaneers. Up to the end, "Mr. G" was still in touch with numerous students and colleagues with whom he had developed lifelong friendships. On the personal side, Bernie met the love of his life, Sandra (Levine), in 1958, who was studying at Simmons College in Boston. They were married for 48 years and resided in Brookline, MA until Sandra's untimely passing. Bernie and Sandy built their life in Brookline, surrounded by close friends and family. In his retirement Bernie was a part-time substitute teacher at Brookline High School, volunteered on the Town's Commission for the Disabled and never missed a home game at Fenway Park. In 2007, Bernie relocated to Orange County, California, reluctantly giving up his Red Sox season tickets, to be nearer his son Richard, daughter in law Marci, and beloved grandchildren Zev and Daisy. He was a fixture at all their school events and at as many soccer games as he could muster over the years. Services will be held at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA on Sunday, March 27, 2016 at 10:30am followed by burial at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA. There will be no memorial observance. A memorial service will be held in Southern California at a later date. Donations in Bernie's memory may be made to the Bed- ford Education Foundation, www.bedfordeducation.org Levine Chapels, Brookline 617-277-8300 www.levinechapel.com
