Obituary Condolences

Bertha Bachner BROOKLINE Bertha Bachner, 101, was born in Boston to Samuel and Rose Bellar. Bertha grew up in Roxbury with her two sisters, Sarah (Sally) and Marion, and her two brothers, Morris (Moe) and Benjamin, all now deceased. Bertha enrolled in Boston Universitys then-new journalism program in 1925, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1929. She went on to Harvards Graduate School of Education, concluding her studies there after one semester, to marry Barnard Bachner, a Norfolk County attorney and, later, judge, who died in 1960. The two resided in Franklin, where they raised three children: Brenda (Hewit), who died in 2009, Peter, and John. She moved to Brookline in 1962 to be close to her family, and accepted a series of part-time positions that gave her the varied work experiences she craved and the time to play golf, which she loved. She also audited a variety of courses at BU, ultimately through the Evergreen Program of the schools Metropolitan College, which recognized her love of learning at award ceremonies in 1999. Throughout her life she was a voracious reader and ardent Red Sox fan who served as her childrens trusted mentor and her familys beloved matriarch. Her two sons, seven of nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren survive her, as do her beloved son-in-law, L. Harvey Hewit, of Haverford, Pa., and her equally beloved daughters-in-law, Lois (Siff) Bachner of Niantic, Conn., and Patricia (Bain) Bachner of Great Falls, Va. Funeral arrangements were handled by Stanetsky Memorial Chapels.
