Corliss Knapp Engle Corliss Knapp Engle CHESTNUT HILL Corliss Knapp Engle, of Chestnut Hill, MA, died on November 26, while at home surrounded by her family and friends. Born in Flushing, NY, she was the daughter of Dorothy Roan and Arthur Knapp, Jr. A graduate of Middlebury College, Corliss's passion for horticulture resulted in her 30 year involvement with the Garden Club of America as horticulture judge, chair, and director of numerous committees; New England Flower Show entrant and judge; served as trustee of the Massachusetts Horticulture Society; Trustee and overseer of the New England Wild Flower Society; member of the Director's Advisory Committee for the Arnold Arboretum; and member of countless plant societies. Her contributions to the Begonia Society led to the Begonia "Corliss Engle" named in her honor. Corliss' writings and photographs have appeared in local and national publications. She wrote for, edited and designed the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts publication "Mayflower"; she researched the gardening history of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams for the journal, "White House History." Corliss was the recipient of the Garden Club of America Achievement Medal; four GCA Beattie Medals; and she was honored by the Town of Brookline, for her 30 year membership in the Tree Planting Committee. She leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Ralph P. Engle, Jr.; a son Ralph Philip Engle, III and his wife Mary Biscaldi Engle of Rye, NH; a son Arthur "Arkie" Knapp Engle and his wife Randie Cane Engle of Pittsburgh, Pa. and their children Noa, Aliza, Yonah, Estie, Menachem, and Aron; a brother George Marvin-Smith and his wife Lisa and their children Gregory, Andrew, and Elizabeth; and dear friends Dr. Gary Gross and his wife Betsy Shure Gross and their children Liza Draper and Andrew Gross-Gaitan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at 2 p.m., at the Church of the Redeemer, 379 Hammond St., Chestnut Hill, Newton. Burial will take place in Walnut Hills Cemetery in Brookline, on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at noon, prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Corliss Knapp Engle Scholarship Fund established by the Chestnut Hill Garden Club, P.O. Box 67442, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467.
