Gertrude Glode Obituary
Gertrude Glode passed away peacefully in her sleep September 29, 2015, four days after her 99th birthday, at German Extended Care Center in West Roxbury. Gertrude was born September 25, 1916, the daughter of Kenneth and Sara (Acheson) Powers. Gert grew up in Melrose, MA and graduated from Melrose High School. She attended nursing school at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford, MA graduating in 1939. In 1951 she joined Robert Brigham Hospital in Boston where she was a nurse manager. In January, 1958 she married John Glode, an army officer and they were stationed in Maryland and Germany until Johns death in 1960. Gertrude returned to the Brigham Hospital and in 1980 four hospitals including Brigham merged to form Brigham and Womens Hospital. Though nearing retirement, she stayed another year to assist in developing operating procedures. Within a year after retiring she was back at the hospital as a volunteer. She continued as a very active volunteer for 25 years. She is survived by her brother, John Powers of Niantic, CT, his children , Colin Powers and wife Laurie and son Liam; Sara Powers Hall, husband Robin, and sons Walker and Conner; Alexander Powers and wife Fiona; also her faithful niece, Jane Hawkes, and nieces Carol Springer, Jill Mattarazzo, Suzane Kennedy, Patricia Barsamiam and Robyn Willmore, and nephews John and Terrence Willmore. There will be a graveside blessing at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose at 12:45 on October 10, 2015.
