Helen L. Cohn of Brookline, MA, formerly of Plainview, NY, passed away on December 2, 2013 at age 91, surrounded by her family. Daughter of Edna Kaplan and Philp Balty and stepdaughter of Irving Kaplan. Beloved wife for 44 years of the late Prof. Marvin Cohn. Loving mother of Joel Cohn and his wife Suma of Honolulu and Carol Cohn of Brookline, and cherished grandmother of Mariel Cohn. Sister of the late Bea Friedland of New York. Helen was born and raised in New York City, and attended Evander Childs High School. She went to Brooklyn College, did wartime work at an electronics factory and earned her BA from Hofstra University and MA from Adelphi University. She taught in the elementary schools of Plainview for over 25 years and was a founding member of the Plainview Congress of Teachers. She was widely loved and admired for her selfless dedication to her family, friends and the teaching profession, her passionate lifelong commitment to justice, freedom and equality, and her extraordinary talents as a creator of legendary gourmet meals and magnificent gardens. Funeral arrangements are private. A Life Celebration will be held at a later date. Memorial Donations may be made to the Carroll Center for the Blind or to Elizabeth Warren for MA.
