Herbert L. Shivek Obituary
Herbert L Shivek, 'Forever in our Hearts', age 97, of Chestnut Hill passed away Monday, May 21, 2018. He set the perfect example of leading a full and meaningful life, devoted to his family first and foremost and then supporting many causes that would make a difference in the lives of others. His dedication and generous spirit were an inspiration. For 71 loving years, Herb was the devoted husband of his true love, Louise (Shaps), adored father of Carol Goldman and Janet Frishman and loving grandfather of Jeffrey Frishman, Jason Frishman and Benjamin Goldman. Herb was a graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After an early graduation, due to World War II, he was employ ed by the Curtiss Wright Corporation as an aircraft structures engineer. Subsequently he joined his family firm, which became one of the major producers of equipment for the food service industry in the United States. Herb felt a strong commitment to be actively involved in many worthwhile endeavors. He demonstrated leadership skills in civic activities for the Town of Brookline. As chairman of the Brookline Planning Board, he was commended by the Board of Selectmen for introducing new concepts in planning. Additionally, the board was formally recogn ized and honored as one of the premier municipal planning organizations in Southern New England. Herb also chaired the Brookline Council for Planning and Renewal and served on many other committees including the Zoning Board of Appeals, Comprehensive Plan Review Commission, Growth Policy Committee, Housing Policy Committee and Building Code Review Commission. Also, he was elected Brookline Town Meeting member for 16 years. His communal activities included being President of the Temple Emeth Brotherhood, President of Temple Emeth and South Brookline area chairman of CJP and Israel Bonds. He is a former Vice Chairman of Hebrew SeniorLife, a trustee for life, and served as director of the City Bank and Trust Company. Herb also was a director of the New England Sinai Hospital for over 30 years and a Vice Chairman of the hospital and Chairman of the Facilities Planning Committee. Herb and his wife Louise have always been affiliated with numerous charitable organizations for which they shared a deep commitment. They sponsor an annual seminar on oncology at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and an annual lecture in Bible at Temple Emeth. In addition, they sponsor an annual scholarship at Brandeis University. Their charitable efforts extended to endowments of rooms at various New England hospitals, as well as the Brookline Public Library. His energy, persistent drive and determination to give of himself was inspiring. He was sensitive, thoughtful, modest and humble, the characteristics of a true gentleman. He was one of a kind and irreplaceable. Life wont ever be the same without Herb. He was a gift we will always treasure. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to either Hebrew SeniorLife, or The Friends of Dana Farber. Levine Chapels, Brookline 617-277-8300 www.levinechapel.com
