Janet Hodgson-White, 71, died peacefully at her home in Waban on December 5, 2011, after a long illness. Janet was born in Boston on September 9, 1941. The only daughter of Robert and Katherine (Sprague) Hodgson, she was raised in Hingham, MA. A graduate of Hingham High School and Vassar College, she was a dedicated teacher in the Brookline Public School system for many years. At that time she was known as Janet Berman. In later years she and her husband, renowned child psychologist Burton L. White, founded and ran a program for parents called New Parents as Teachers. Janet was the beloved wife of Burton White for over 25 years and the devoted mother of the late Mark Berman. Her brother William Sprague Hodgson died in 2010. Janet will forever be remembered by her loving stepchildren, Laura and her husband Mark, Dan and his wife Sheryl, Emily and her husband Eric, and David, along with her seven grandchildren, Sam, Jenny, Anjolie, Melissa, Rachel, Matty and Rebecca, her niece Haidan Hodgson, and the many other friends and relatives who were blessed to know her. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, December 17, at 2PM at the Newton Cemetery Chapel (791 Walnut Street, Newton Center) and a gathering afterwards at the Newton Marriott Hotel (2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton) from 3:30 to 6PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janets name to the Seasons Hospice Foundation (6400 Shafer Court, Suite 700, Rosemont, IL 60018) or the Mark H. Berman Endowed Scholarship Fund at Carleton College (One North College Street, Northfield, MN 55057).
