Obituary Condolences

At 1:50 am on August 2, 2012, Mary Margaret Peggy Harris, aged 91, died peaceably in her sleep. For the past 11 years she was a resident of Center Communities Brookline at 100 Centre Street in Brookline, MA. Born in Osceola, Iowa on March 4, 1921, Peggy was the second child and only daughter of Paul and Gladys Simmons. She graduated from Northwestern University in 1942. She married Robert T. Harris on March 30, 1946. Peggy taught first grade for over 30 years, including 11 at the Devotion School in Brookline. At age 89, she wrote and published a book, Growing Up in the Great Depression. She enjoyed writing, reading and travel. For 68 years she was an active member of P.E.O., a philanthropic organization for women's education. Peggy is survived by her four sons: Paul, Peter, Eugene and John; and ten grandchildren: Joshu, Lillian, Anna Lee, Trevor, Grace, Mark, Laura, Ben, Dave and Mary. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert T. Harris and her brother, John Simmons. A celebration of Peggy's life was held on Sunday, August 5 at 100 Centre Street, Brookline. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the P.E.O. Foundation, P.E.O. Executive Office, Treasurer's Dept., 3700 Grand Ave., Des Moines IA 50312. Those of us who knew Peggy will miss her warmth, compassion, intelligence and humor. She was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother, a talented writer and a voracious reader. She cultivated close friendships throughout the U.S. and in many parts of the world.
