Matthew H. Olins Obituary
Matthew H. Olins, age 45, passed away in Marseille, France on Thursday, March 13, 2014 after fighting a courageous battle with ALS for over 4 years. He is survived by his beloved wife Anne Olins and sons Guillaume and Laurent; his father and step-mother Andrew Olins and Elizabeth Craig-Olins of Brookline; his mother Sheila Olins of Baltimore; and his siblings Alexandra Olins, Mary Gardner, Heather Olins, and Jake Olins; and countless friends around the world. Matthew was born in Brookline, MA, graduated from Brookline High School, University of Pennsylvania, and Boston University School of Education. After a brief teaching career in Boston, Brookline, and Cape Cod, Matthew dedicated his life to humanitarian causes. He served in the Peace Corps, and worked for Partners in Health of Cambridge, MA. Then in Africa he worked with various NGOs including the International Rescue Committee in Guinea-Bissau and Liberia, Save the Children (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) in Angola, and finally as Chief of Education, UNICEF (United Nations Childrens Fund) for Somalia while living in Kenya with his family. A funeral will take place in Marseille, France on Tuesday, March 18. A memorial service and celebration of Matthews life will take place in Brookline at a date to be determined.
