Nancy A. Wolff Obituary
Nancy Ann Osborn Wolff, daughter of Charles A. and Gladys (Poitras) Osborn, age 89, died February 21, 2017 at her home in Cambridge, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers. Nancy was born in Bombay, India where her father worked for the Standard Oil Company. She was sent to boarding schools in Massachusetts and southern India, and then moved permanently to the United States, where she finished high school in Taunton. At eighteen she enrolled in the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing, graduating in 1948. Soon afterwards, Nancy met Richard Wolff, a medical student. They married and settled in Brookline where they lived for more than 50 years. As a young mother Nancy was active in the League of Women Voters and Hadassah at Temple Israel, later graduating from UMass Boston with honors. She introduced her children to politics, taking them on evening candle-lit peace marches in the late 1960's and listening to talk radio. She taught by example. Remaining open minded was key. She loved dogs, gardening, movies, mysteries, poetry, ice cream, and a good love story. She was a great listener and always encouraged her kids to consider other people's points of view. Every morning from the sixties on, she walked (briskly) at the Brookline Reservoir with her dogs. She read voraciously, and widely. She had a subscription to The New Yorker for 50 years until macular degeneration made reading impossible. We loved her, and we're grateful for her life, and we will miss her for the rest of our lives. Nancy leaves children Alice (Joe Collins), David (Michele King), Judith, and Amy Wolff-Cay (Bill); and grandchildren Ben, Anna, Marc, Emily, Joshua, Henry, and Larisa. Nancy also leaves a sister and brother in law, Norma and Ed Imhoff. Service at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline on Friday, February 24th at 1PM. Burial at Walnut Hills Cemetery, 96 Grove St., Chestnut Hill. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Brookline Food Pantry, 15 St. Paul Street, Brookline, MA 02446 or the .
