Robert A. Stephens Obituary
Robert A. Stephens known and loved as Bob, passed away on January 4, 2013 at 75 years of age after struggling for over 6 years pulmonary fibrosis. Bob was born in St Louis, Missouri on January 15, 1937, the son of Charles and Pearl (Cales) Stephens and grew up with two older brothers (Don and Carrol). He earned a BA from Missouri Valley College and a MA from Nova Southeastern University. From 1974 to 1989 he was Executive Director/ CEO of Beech Acres in Cincinnati, Ohio and also during this time period he was actively involved in numerous community endeavors and an active member on many local boards. In 1989 he moved to New England to become Executive Director of the New England Home for Little Wanderers until 1992 at which time he became a Financial Advisor for Waddell & Reed (1992-2007) and then Baystate Financial Services (2008 to present). Bob served on the board of Habitat for Humanity as a member from 1992 to 1997 and was their Board Vice President from 1994-97. In 2001 he became a board member of Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries and in 2003 became their Board President until 2005. Also, since 1992 he was a member of the North Shore Business Forum and their President from 2003-2007. Bob was always a deeply religious individual and a life long Elder in the Presbyterian Church. This was an extremely important part of his life where his true calling shined brightly whenever it was stewardship time. He enjoyed preparing for and preaching a few times every year and he had a real passion for Romans and led many classes on these passages. He served on numerous boards within the Presbyterian Church both here in Massachusetts and elsewhere prior to moving to New England. Bob and his wife, Sonya Ann Abbott were married in 1993 at Old South Church in Boston by the Rev James Crawford they enjoyed 19 yrs of marriage and were a perfect match for each other. In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by two daughters from a previous marriage. His daughter Shari Stephens lives in Chillicothe, Missouri, along with his granddaughter Laura, and his daughter Beth Newman and her husband Edward live in Missouri City, Texas near his granddaughter Katy Wentworth and her husband Brian. His other granddaughter Haley Armstrong lives in California. Bob also has a nephew, Dale Stephens and family (grandnephews/ nieces and great grandnephews/ nieces) in Oklahoma City and a niece Lynne Stephens and family in Orlando, Florida and grandnephews in Colorado and Kentucky. There will be visitation hours at Bell ODea Funeral Home in Brookline, MA on Friday, January 11th from 5pm until 8pm and again on Saturday , January 12th from 2pm until 5pm. A Memorial Service and Celebration of Bobs life will be held on what would have been his 76th birthday, Tuesday, January 15th at 11am at the First Presbyterian Church in Brookline.
