William E. Murphy Obituary
Retired Brookline Fire Chief, William E. Murphy, age 87, of East Sandwich, died on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at JML Care Center in Falmouth from Parkinsons disease. Born in Brookline, Mr. Murphy grew up and lived in Brookline for 57 years prior to his move to Sandwich upon his retirement in 1979. A graduate of Brookline High School in 1942, he attended Boston College for a semester before enlisting in the Army. He was a WWII Army veteran having served as a Staff Sergeant in the Pacific campaign from 1943-1946. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal and the Victory Medal. Following his honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, he was hired as a temporary firefighter for the Brookline Fire Department. He was appointed a permanent firefighter in 1948, promoted to Lieutant in 1953, Captain in 1959, Deputy Chief in 1964, Acting Chief in 1973, and Chief in 1974. He served as Chief of the department for five years until his retirement in 1979. He received an Associates Degree in Fire Science Technology, cum laude, in 1971 from Massachusetts Bay Community College. After his retirement as Chief, he was a part-time seasonal employee of the Woods Hole, Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority from 1980-1996. He was a member of the Bishop Connolly Council #9444 Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW and a past member of the Boston Sparks Association and Massachusetts, New England and International Fire Chiefs Associations. He is survived by his loving wife Marie C. (Robertie) Murphy, to whom he was married for 62 years., and his children Celine M. Hardy and her husband Robert of Sandwich, John F. and his wife Ellen of Sandwich, Kathleen T. of Sandwich, William E. Jr. and his wife Maryellen of Attleboro, Jeanne Waters and her husband Joseph of Medford, Gerard of Keene, NH, Kevin P. and his wife Lisa of Wake Forest, NC and Brian and his wife Susan of Cheektowaga, NY. He was the loving Papa of 21 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, also father of the late Richard Murphy. He always enjoyed his time with his family, liked to travel and was an avid Boston sports fan, particularly fond of the Red Sox and Patriots. Funeral Services were held from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave., (at Route 151) Mashpee.
