Doris Birchfield, a longtime resident of East Orleans, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012 at the age of 85. She was the wife of IBM executive, Thomas Birchfield, also deceased, for 60 years. Mrs.Birchfield was born in Aurora, Missouri where, as a young adult, she began and enjoyed a career in both the financial and oil industries. After meeting and marrying her husband,Thomas, the two began a family and traveled the world for both business and pleasure. They were longtime residents of New Canaan, CT, as well as Cape Cod, and also resided in Tokyo, Japan for many years on assignment for IBM where Mr. Birchfield served as Director of Commercial and Industry Relations of IBMs Asia Pacific Group. She was active in numerous social and civic organizations, both overseas and stateside, and promoted community concerns ranging from neighborhood groups such as the Nauset Heights Association, to national efforts by organizations such as The American Cancer Society. Doris was active as a past member of The Orleans Yacht Club, various garden clubs, womens groups and non-profit concerns in all communities where she lived. Her name is to be noted as a past officer or board member in so many arenas. She loved to laugh, was an accomplished League Bowler, a worthy opponent at the card table and she designed her own home in East Orleans. She is survived by a sister, Freda and a brother, William, both of Missouri, along with a daughter, Janet, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, a son, James, of East Orleans, and James wife and Orleans business owner, Katie. Doris cherished and was devoted to her two grandchildren, Jonathan and Alyssa, who reside on the Cape with their parents. A memorial service will be held in Orleans at a future date this summer.
