Maurice L. "Rocky" Griffin, Jr., 74, of Hope Valley, Rhode Island, formerly of Concord, Massachusetts, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Born in Concord on January 5, 1938 he was the son of the late Maurice L. Griffin Sr. and Edna (Murphy) Griffin. He attended Concord public schools and graduated from Concord High School in 1957. After High School, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy, serving on two ships in the Far East. He was a gunner's mate, 3rd Class, on the USS Toledo and USS Helena of the 7th Fleet. For thirty-eight years, prior to his retirement in 2001, Mr. Griffin worked as a Supervisor for the Town of Concord, Highway Department. He often said that he loved working for the Town of Concord. A sports enthusiast, he was an avid fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and coached the highway department softball team for many years. He enjoyed dancing, roller-skating, camping, spending time at the beach and landscaping. He was a member of the Maynard Auto Club and loved cruising in his red 1974 Grandville convertible. Survivors include, two sons, Maurice L. "Rocky" III and his wife Sharon of Leominster and Timothy and his wife Christine of Brooksville, Florida. Also survived by his loving partner Donna C. Gustavsen of Hope Valley, Rhode Island. He was the brother of the late Edna Green. Funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 8th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 AM followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center at 10 AM. Celebrant of the Funeral Mass will be the Rev. Austin H. Fleming, Pastor. Burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord where Fr. Fleming will read the committal prayers and officers of the U. S. Navy will present military honors. Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Monday, May 7th from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM. Concord's town flag will be at half-staff on Tuesday in recognition of Mr. Griffin's service to his country in the U. S. Navy.
