Howard Locke Jr.

Howard R. Locke, Jr., 97, of Danvers, formerly of Marblehead, died Tuesday morning, December 4, 2012 at home following a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Ella Mae (Marshall) Locke, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Born in Amherst, NH, on August 24, 1915, he was the son of the late Howard and Louise (Ford) Locke, he was raised and educated there and was a graduate of Amherst High School. He later graduated from the University of New Hampshire where he was a member of Theta Chi. An honorably discharged veteran of WWII, Mr. Locke served as a captain in the U.S. Army and saw service in Okinawa and in the Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star for his service to his country. A forty-year resident of Marblehead and a member of St. Andrew Episcopal Church, he was self-employed as an electrical contractor for several years and was with Central Electrical until his retirement. A true gentleman with a quiet sense of humor, he was an example of successful aging. Healthy until the end of his life, he enjoyed traveling into his 90s to visit great-grandchildren in Colorado and his nephew in Palm Springs. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Powers and her husband Charles of Danvers, 6 grandchildren, Debi Buck of OH, Diane Sullivan of GA, Kevin Powers of Haverhill, Daniel Powers of CO, Michael Powers of MI, and Brendan Powers of NY, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by a daughter, Linda Mae Locke. His Funeral Services were held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Care VNA & Hospice, 210 Market Street, Lynn MA, 01901.
