John Allen Ellerbee, 102, of South Dennis, died on May 26, 2013 at the Cape Cod Hospital. Born on August 23, 1910, in Red Bluff, SC, he was the son of the late Henry and Julie Anne (Pipkin) Ellerbee. John lived an exemplary Christian life. He was baptized in the Sarian Baptist Church in McColl, SC and later joined the Calvary Baptist Church in Paterson, NJ in 1930. After migrating from the south, John and his family settled in Paterson, NJ. In 1931, he helped build Hinchliffe Stadium where he later played on the Smart Set Negro League semi-pro baseball team. During WWII, he worked in a war plant, Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical. He later went on to open an auto detailing and simonizing business, which he ran until his retirement in 1968. In 1968, John moved his family to South Dennis, MA. He spent his retirement years enjoying sporting events, fishing, gardening and cooking. John's wisdom knew no bounds, he encouraged others to eat healthy, exercise and live a good Christian life. In addition to his parents and 21 siblings, he was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 63 years, Merrian (Smitherman) Ellerbee and his daughter, Janice Ellerbee Swaun. He leaves behind his daughter, Rosalind D. Ellerbee of South Dennis and Bradenton, FL; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service will be celebrated at 10:45 am on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the Zion Union Church, 805 Attucks Lane in Hyannis, MA, with the Rev. Bernard Harris, Sr., officiating. The Ellerbee family would like to thank all of those who shared their love and friendship during this time of loss.
