Helen C. (Dzerkacz) Gately, 91 of Dover, MA and a former longtime Maynard, MA resident, died peacefully Sun. Oct. 28, 2012 at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence in Wayland, MA. She was the beloved wife of the late Edwin Burke Gately, to whom she was married for 59 years at the time of his death in 2003. Born and raised in Maynard, she was the daughter of the late John and Katherine (Mileusz) Dzerkacz, and sister of the late Mary Kulevich, Sophia Minko and John Dzerkacz. She and her future husband, Edwin, graduated from Maynard High School and were married while he was serving in the US Navy during WW II. Theirs was a very loving marriage and the couple were true partners in all aspects of their lives, including Mr. Gately's ventures in real estate, a service station, liquor store and his time as a Maynard Selectman. Mrs. Gately was a very devoted and active member of The Ladies Sodality and St. Casimir's Church in Maynard, which her father was involved in establishing for the Polish community in town. The Gatelys enjoyed time spent on Cape Cod and in Boca Raton, FL. Mrs. Gately is remembered as a kind, gracious person with a generosity of the spirit, a dry wit and good business sense. Most central in her life was her love of her Polish heritage and for her family, including her large extended family. Mrs. Gately is survived by three children, James E. Gately of Ft. Lee, NJ, Catherine H. Gately of Dover, MA., and Robert J. Gately of Duxbury, MA; two grandsons, Sean and Christopher Gately; 13 nieces and nephews, and many grand-nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time, however the family is planning visiting hours, a funeral Mass and burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Maynard. Dates, times and memorial contribution information will be announced, updated at www.actonfuneralhome.com, or by calling the Acton Funeral Home at 978-263-5333.
