Whitley May Daly, 59, died at Holy Family Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill on August 3, after a long illness. Whit was born in Spokane, WA, on January 29, 1955, the first child of Kenneth Dale and Marguerite Whitley May. The family lived briefly in Littleton, CO, and Syosset, NY, before settling in Topsfield in 1959. They moved to Boxford in 1968. Whitley graduated from Masconomet Regional High School in 1973 and was voted "Most Witty." She inherited a love of cars as well as her name from her mechanic grandfather, and enjoyed working at auto parts stores as a young woman. Just shy of five feet tall, and barely cracking 100 pounds, she held her own in the male-dominated profession. She also worked as a school bus driver, and at Nunan's Nursery and Scotty's Mobil in Georgetown and the Ricker Farm in Rowley. Most recently she was an assistant manager at Family Dollar in Haverhill. Whit loved to cook meals from scratch, tend dying plants until they thrived, and find interesting rocks and pieces of wood to paint and embellish. She liked to tromp through the woods, go fishing, and identify interesting birds and plants with her kids and later grandchildren. Her children marveled at how she seemed to know everyone in town by name. She collected frog figurines, little antique chairs, and old bottles, among other things. She didn't care for urban settings, cold weather, or high technology. Predeceased by her parents, Whitley leaves daughter Meghan May Daly of Beverly, son Patrick John Daly of Haverhill, three grandchildren; her brother, Kenneth Dwight May of Brockton, and sister, Melanie May of Brookline; and many nieces and nephews. The family will spread ashes privately. A celebration of Whitley's life is being planned for the fall.
