Dexter R. Hunneman, Jr., age 91, of Cape Elizabeth, died in Portland, Maine on October 26th, 2013. He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice P. Hunneman; his sons, Dexter R. Hunneman, III of Boston, MA, and Robert D. Hunneman of Freeport, ME; daughters, Damaris Fletcher of Thornhill, Scotland and Melissa Seig of Portland, ME; five grandchildren: Ewan, Robert, Elizabeth, Nicholas, and James and three great-grandchildren: Fergus, Hector, and Charles. His first wife, Damaris (Drummond) of Portland, died in 1999 on their 55th wedding anniversary. Mr. Hunneman was born in Hamilton, MA and prepared for college at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH, and Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, MA. He graduated from Amherst College in 1945. During World War II, Mr. Hunneman served in the European Theatre, 56th Armored Infantry Battalion, 12th Armored Division and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and two Unit Citations. He was a Vice President of the Canal Bank (now Key Bank) in Portland for 30 years, retiring in 1977. Also, he was Treasurer and a Director of the State of Maine Publicity Bureau for 25 years, a corporator of the Portland Savings Bank, Treasurer and member of the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department's Hose Co. #2 for 25 years, and Treasurer of the Maine , serving as State Chairman of that organization in 1970. An avid golfer, Mr. Hunneman belonged to many golf clubs in MA, ME, and SC. He also enjoyed skiing, fly-fishing, and duck-hunting, and traveled extensively through five continents, a favorite destination in his later life being St. Maarten. He was a member of the Portland Kiwanis Club and a member of the Cumberland Club for 40 years. Funeral arrangements will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maine Medical Center.
