Richard R. Christensen Obituary
Richard R. Christensen, 79, of North Hampton, died Friday, August 10, 2012 at Hyder Family Hospice in Dover. He was born in Detroit, MI, April 10, 1933 a son of the late Roy E. and Rene (Murphy) Christensen. Richard lived his first 17 years in the Detroit area where he attended Edison Institute High School in Dearborn from 1947 to 1950, and then moved to Mason, Michigan, where he graduated from Mason High School in 1951. Richard attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh from 1951-56, graduating with a B.S. in Physics and a Masters in Industrial Administration. At Carnegie, Richard was an active member of the Delta Alpha chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, serving as the Treasurer, Grand Procurator, and Grand Master of the chapter. He also served as Student Council President and President of the Council of Fraternity Presidents at Carnegie, and was a member of a number of honor societies. Following college, Richard served from 1956-58 in the United States Army, stationed at Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Professionally, Richard worked over 40 years with a number of financial and consulting firms, mostly in Boston and Chicago, including Booz, Allen and Hamilton, Continental Investment, Heizer Corporation, and Liberty Financial Companies, where he finished his career as Chairman of Liberty Asset Management Company (LAMCO), which oversaw two closed-end mutual funds listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Along the way, Richard was either Vice President or President of these firms. Until suffering a stroke in 1992, Richard was an avid sailor, captaining a Bristol 29 around Lake Michigan out of the Chicago Yacht Club and up and down the northern New England coast out of the Manchester Yacht Club. Richard loved cruising but was also a tenacious racer. Richard was a devoted family man who enjoyed packing the family Volkswagen Van and heading on cross-country road trips to ski in Colorado or visit his father Roy in beautiful Higgins Lake. He also served as a Scout Master when his sons were active Cub Scouts in Barrington, Illinois. A native of Detroit, Richard was a lifelong Detroit Red Wings fan. Richard was also a voracious reader, closely following world events and the latest developments in astrophysics. Survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Cordelia Dee (Auberg) Christensen of North Hampton; sons Peter Richard Christensen of De Pere, WI, David D. Christensen and his wife Kelly of Melrose, MA, James T. Christensen of North Hampton; daughter Daisy Christensen and her husband David K. Shay of Decatur, GA; grandsons, William Christensen Shay and Peter F. Shay of Decatur; granddaughters, Samantha A. Christensen and Margaret G. Christensen of De Pere, Tatum F. Christensen and Evangeline D. Christensen of Melrose; brothers, Robert M. Christensen and Thomas A. Christensen, both of Mason, MI. Richard was predeceased by son Douglas R. Christensen. Visiting hours will be from 11 A.M. | 1 P.M. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Services will immediately follow in the funeral home at 1 P.M. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Burial will be private.
