Robert W. Keys

Robert William Bob Keys, 84, longtime resident of Hanover and writer of The View from This Side passed away on Wednesday, January 9 in hospice care in Dover, NH. Bob was born on April 17, 1928 and grew up in Akron, OH and Altoona, PA. He entered the service in 1946 and served as a staff sergeant in Italy. Upon his return, he enrolled and graduated from Penn State University and began working for Liberty Mutual Insurance in their Philadelphia office. There he met and married the former Catherine Reithmeier and they were wed in May of 1953. Bob spent his entire 40-year career at Liberty first as an underwriter and later as a vice-president. He was a nationally recognized expert in National Risk and an author of both book chapters and innumerable trade journal articles on the subject. After his retirement in 1991, he turned his interests to his family, water coloring and writing. Bob penned the popular View from This Side columns that ran in the Hanover mariner, some 600 articles, from 1993 to 2005. He was a long-time volunteer at the John Curtis Library and delivered for Meals on Wheels. Bob was preceded in death by his wife Catherine in 2004. He is survived by his four children, Katherine Keys of Shaftsbury, VT, Chris Keys of Hadley, MA, Rob Keys and his wife Sandi of Berwick, ME and Carolyn Keys Edwards and her husband Michael of Townsend, MA, his seven grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and his dear heart, Evelyn Burns of Weymouth, MA. A memorial and celebration of his life will took place on Saturday, January 19 at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St., Rte 53 in Hanover and was followed by a brief service and subsequent burial at the Hanover Center Cemetery.
