Barbara (Bobby) Loftus died on December 28, 2013. She was born in Floral Park, New York, on October 9, 1936, to John and Christine Schorsch. She came to 12 Poppy Place in Floral Park as a newborn and stayed for the next 66 years. Barbara was educated at the Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary School, Sewanhaka High School, and the Southampton School of Nursing. In 1967, Barbara married Gerry Loftus and they made 12 Poppy Place their home with children Linda, Susan, and Tom. Barbara was a member of the Floral Park Junior Womens Club, and in 1974 served as the New York State Public Affairs Chairwoman for the General Federation of Womens Clubs. She was also a founding member of the AARP Chapter in Floral Park. The family built a vacation home in Dingmans Ferry, PA in the early 1970s, and for the next 17 years, Barbara was often the president and editor of the newsletter for the community association. Her proudest achievement in her public life was her part in the two-year legal battle to defend the right of all of its members to vote by absentee ballot. In 2003, Barbara and Gerry retired to Cape Cod where Barbara stayed in touch with her many friends made over the years, as well as making new ones in Harwich and Orleans, who shared her enthusiasm for good conversation and the games of Mah Jongg and Scrabble. She also joined Gerry on the Harwich Affordable Housing Committee. Survivors include her husband, Gerry; her two daughters and their spouses, Linda and Rick Brown, and Susan Loftus and Terrie Young; her son, Tom Loftus; her two grandchildren, Sarah and Drew; and her loving puppy dog, Zoe. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Jay Taft, and her brother and sister-in-law, John and Carol Schorsch. Friends called from 2-4 PM on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main Street (Route 28), West Harwich, MA 02671. A funeral service followed at 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
