Eleanore "Ellie" Coty Singer, 77, of Eastham, Massachusetts, passed away on March 25, 2013, at home with her daughter, Marianne C. Singer, and her husband, Martin L. Singer at her bedside. Ellie was the daughter of Gertrude (Hayes) and Francis Coty of Worchester, Massachusetts.
Ellie was born in Catskill, New York. Although she moved with parents to various New York State locations eventually her family settled in Catskill in 1948 where she first met her husband, Marty, and graduated high school. The Adirondacks Mountains, Silver Lake Camp specifically, is where Ellie spent her summers as a camper, counselor, and head counselor. Ellie attended Russell Sage College in Troy, NY, majoring in Physical Education. After graduation, she traveled to Washington State to teach. During her career, she also taught at Mills College in Oakland (CA), Canton (NY) High School, Potsdam State College (NY). During this period, she earned a master's degree from St. Lawrence University . In 1962 she returned to Russell Sage College where she was a faculty member for over thirty years. When she retired as Professor Emerita, she was a hairperson of the Physical Education Department and Director of Athletics at Sage.
In addition to her love of the Adirondacks, Ellie adored Cape Cod. A visitor since the mid-sixties, she and Marty built their home in Eastham in 1981. Ellie, Marty, and Marianne thoroughly enjoyed their stays on the Cape, and, after living in North Greenbush, NY and Latham, NY, she and Marty moved permanently to the Cape in 2009. An avid and capable golfer, Ellie especially relished playing at Holly Ridge Golf Club where she scored a hole-in-one and played in the Wednesday Morning Women's League. Reading, watching sports, playing bridge, and doing puzzles- all types of puzzles: word games, crossword, jigsaw-were a great source of pleasure for her.
Her family, too, gave her pleasure. She was a devoted wife and mom. She was always aware of her family's needs and advised and aided Marty and Marianne with love and devotion. Ellie was a dog lover and the family was never without a pet dog. Moose, her current pup, w as her constant companion.
She will be greatly missed not only by her family but by her many friends she made over the course of her life.
Funeral services will be private; however, there will be a celebration of Ellie's life sometime in the near future.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be to the "Ellie Singer Fund," The Eastham Public Library, 190 Samoset Road, Eastham, MA 02642. Donations will be used to purchase mystery books.
